What Should We Wear for Our Photos?
Easy Outfit Tips for Real Families
If you’ve just booked your family photo session (yay!) and now find yourself staring into your wardrobe thinking, “What the heck do we wear?”—you are 100% not alone.
Choosing outfits is one of the most common stress points for families before a shoot—but it doesn’t have to be. I’ve put together this easy, no-fuss guide to help you feel confident, comfy and camera-ready without buying a whole new wardrobe.
Let’s break it down.
First Rule: Comfort Over Everything
If you don’t feel good in it, you won’t look relaxed in photos. Skip the stiff jeans, tight dresses or anything you’re constantly adjusting. Choose outfits that feel like you—just the slightly more polished version.
And yes, barefoot on the beach? Totally allowed (and encouraged).
Keep It Simple with Colours
You can’t go wrong with:
Earthy tones like rust, sage, tan, cream, mustard or olive
Soft neutrals like grey, white, beige, denim blue
Muted pastels if you want a pop of colour
These tones photograph beautifully and blend in with natural backdrops like beaches, forests or gardens.
Best to Avoid:
Loud logos or text
Bright neon colours
Everyone wearing matching white shirts and jeans
How to Coordinate (Not Match)
Gone are the days of everyone dressing exactly the same. The goal now is coordination with a little personality.
Here’s how to nail it:
Choose a colour palette rather than a single colour
Start with one person’s outfit (like Mum’s dress or one of the kids) and build around it
Mix textures like knits, linen, denim or cotton to add interest and depth.
Tips for Dressing Little Ones
Choose clothes they can move, run, cuddle and play in
Avoid anything too fussy or itchy
Layers are great for warmth and style
Bring a spare outfit just in case
Overalls, rompers, and relaxed clothing always photograph well and keep kids comfortable.
Dress for the Season & Location
Sessions on the Mornington Peninsula can be breezy—even in summer—so layers are your friend, especially for younger kids.
Cooler months: cosy knits, boots, beanies, warm tones
Summer sessions: linen, floaty dresses, rolled sleeves, light fabrics
My Favourite Outfit Extras
Hats (wide-brim, beanies, fedoras)
A cosy blanket for sitting or cuddling on the ground
Flowing dresses that move beautifully with the breeze
A backup outfit if you're unsure or just want a second option
Your family photo session isn’t about looking perfect—it’s about feeling connected. The best thing you can wear is something that lets you move, laugh, hug and play without fuss.
Keep it simple, wear what feels like you, and let the rest unfold naturally.
