What to Expect at Your Family Photo Session
What to Expect at Your Family Photo Session
(Spoiler: It’s Way More Fun Than You Think!)
If the words “family photo session” make you instantly imagine stiff poses, awkward smiles, or bribing your toddler with snacks—breathe easy. You won’t find any of that here. At Sarah Jane Photography, I’m all about keeping things fun, relaxed, and real.
Whether this is your first family shoot or your fifth, this guide will give you a feel for how things flow—and why so many families leave saying, “That was actually really fun!”
My approach to family photo sessions on the Mornington Peninsula is simple: no pressure, no forced smiles, and definitely no expectations that your kids will sit still the whole time (they won’t, and that’s totally okay).
We’re going to let your little ones lead the way. That means running, exploring, playing, cuddling—and capturing all the real moments in between.
You’ll choose from one of my favourite local gems—think beachy backdrops at Rosebud or quiet forest trails at Seawinds Gardens. These places are not only beautiful, but they’re also familiar, open, and perfect for letting kids feel free to just be.
Looking for something meaningful to your family? I’m always happy to chat about custom locations too!
Honestly, you don’t need to pack much. A few essentials are helpful:
Water + snacks (for the kids and you)
A favourite toy or comfort item (if it helps them settle)
Spare clothes for babies/toddlers (just in case)
You don’t need props, Pinterest-perfect outfits or perfectly behaved children. The magic is in the connection—not perfection.
Think comfy, neutral tones, and clothes you can move in. Earthy colours, soft textures, and barefoot vibes are always a win. Avoid loud logos or overly bright colours that might distract from your faces and connection.
Need help choosing outfits? I’ll send through a guide after you book (and yes, you can absolutely text me outfit pics if you’re unsure—I’m here for that!).
We usually spend around 30–60 minutes together (depending on the type of session), and it honestly flies by. Here’s what it looks like:
A quick hello and a little warm-up (especially for the kids)
Natural prompts to get you laughing, cuddling, playing, and moving
Breaks whenever needed—especially for the little ones
Zero awkward posing or “smile and say cheese!”
The goal? To capture real connection. The way your toddler hides behind your leg. The way you instinctively brush your partner’s hair off their face. The group hugs, giggles, and quiet in-between moments you’ll want to remember forever.
Once your session is done, I head home to back up your images and work some editing magic. You’ll get your full gallery typically delivered within 2–3 weeks via email.
From there, you can download your photos, share them with loved ones, and even order prints or albums directly from your gallery as well as upgrade your gallery so you can download each and every image.
If you’re feeling nervous about booking a family photo session, you’re not alone. But trust me—this isn’t about perfect smiles or forced moments. It’s about you as you are.
Real moments. Real laughter. Real connection.
That’s what natural family photography on the Mornington Peninsula is all about.
So if you’re ready to capture your family just as they are right now—wild, wonderful, and full of love—I’d be honoured to be the one behind the camera.
Let’s make some memories together.
